FAQs
What age range are the Hector books for?
1
Hector the Hedgehog books are picture books written for young children, roughly ages 3–8. However, they are great for readers of all ages, with themes and vocabulary that work well for read-aloud time with preschoolers and early readers alike. Each book focuses on a single character trait or social-emotional skill, making them easy for even the youngest listeners to follow.
Do I need to read the books in order?
2
No. Every Hector book is a fully standalone story — there's no reading order required and no need to have read another title first. You can start anywhere in the series and pick books based on the specific trait or lesson your child needs at the moment.

How did Hector come to be?

Hector's story began with my late mother, Laura, who first wrote about a small hedgehog looking for a bed. What started as a family story has grown into a series that carries her memory forward — helping children understand character, kindness, and what it means to be part of a family, no matter how that family comes together.
Why aren't Hector's parent’s hedgehogs?

Hector is adopted, and his family reflects that: his mom Clara is a barn owl and his dad Edmund is a bear. The Forest Friends world is full of families built through love rather than matching species — Hector's siblings Liv (a lynx) and Pip (a raccoon) are adopted too. It's a gentle, visual way of showing kids that families don't have to look alike to belong together.

Yes. Several titles, like Hector's Adoption Day and Hector Gets a New Family, were written specifically to help children process what it means to join a new family. The wider series is also designed with foster and adoptive families in mind, alongside any parent who wants a warm, simple way to talk through big feelings and character traits.
Absolutely. Every Hector book teaches a character trait or social-emotional skill — things like honesty, patience, kindness, and courage — that every child benefits from. The adoption storyline is part of Hector's world, but most titles focus on everyday lessons any family can use.

Yes. Because each book is standalone and built around a single, clear lesson, they're easy to use in classrooms, counseling sessions, or casework — pick the title that matches the conversation you need to have.
